Gaming and esports: trends, opportunities and challenges

In this session we explore trends and opportunities in the world of gaming and esports, as well legal developments and regulation impacting the sector.

Pre-2020, global gaming was estimated to be a booming USD $151.5bn industry. When the pandemic hit, the demand for diversion, online socialising, and escapism increased, causing the industry’s growth to accelerate and far out-perform expectations.

It is reported that the world’s circa 2.7 billion gamers will have spent $174.9bn in 2020, an almost 20% increase year on year. It is now estimated that the global gaming market will exceed $256bn by 2025.

The opportunities provided by this booming industry are numerous – not least the pursuit by Big Tech of the elusive ‘metaverse’. But there is also increasing regulatory scrutiny worldwide.

In this webinar, members of our gaming and esports group are joined by Matthew Kanterman from Bloomberg Intelligence to discuss why you should be excited about the opportunities the gaming sector presents, as well as some emerging legal obstacles that will need to be navigated along the way.
