International law firm Simmons & Simmons has successfully advised DZ Bank, one of Germany’s leading financial institutions and the central institution of the Volksbanken Raiffeisenbanken cooperative network, on the project financing of a wind farm near Licata in Sicily, Italy.
Currently under construction, the wind farm will have an output capacity of approximately 30 megawatts. The project is being developed by wpd, a leading European operator and planner of onshore wind energy projects. This marks wpd’s first large-scale venture in Italy.
The Simmons & Simmons team was led by German partner Dr Jens W. Gölz and Italian partner Tommaso Tomaiuolo, local heads of the firm’s Energy, Natural Resources, Infrastructure and Construction (ENRIC) practices. The cross-border team showcased Simmons’ integrated international capabilities and deep sector expertise.
Commenting on the deal, Jens said, “We are proud to support DZ Bank on another financing in the renewables sector. It’s fantastic to see how our team, made up of Italian and German colleagues, collaborated seamlessly to assist our client in its commitment to developing renewable energy infrastructure across Europe.”
Tommaso added, “This project is a testament to the growing importance of renewable energy in Italy and across Europe. We are delighted to have supported DZ Bank and wpd in bringing this significant project to life, leveraging our cross-border expertise to navigate the complexities of international project financing.”
