Joseph is a supervising associate in our international dispute resolution practice, with a particular focus on contentious and non-contentious insurance work.

He advises insurance market participants and financial institutions on both transactional and contentious insurance issues, including coverage and policy drafting. Joseph represents a range of clients in multi-jurisdictional matters across a number of classes of business including; Credit and Political Risk, Financial Lines, Reinsurance, Casualty and Product Liability. Joseph is regularly instructed by insurance and reinsurance clients in complex disputes, often with an international element, and is experienced in resolving high-value coverage matters.

He has extensive experience advising on the arbitration and litigation of insurance claims, as well as supporting clients on the negotiation and placement of insurance programmes. Recent experience includes:

  • Advising financial institutions on the structuring and placement of credit and non-payment insurance, including bespoke policy wording and regulatory advice.
  • Acting for reinsurers in an arbitration concerning losses under an excess of loss reinsurance treaty.
  • Advising insurers in relation to exposure to Business Interruption losses arising out of the Covid-19 pandemic.
  • Acting for excess insurers in a Bermuda Form arbitration concerning US property losses.
  • Advising insurers on coverage under a range of policies, including commercial combined and general liability policies.

Joseph has a deep understanding of the needs of insurance clients, having assisted a number of insurers to resolve a range of difficult disputes, and completed two secondments to London Market insurers. He frequently presents on insurance topics, particularly Credit Insurance and Political Risk, as well as Bermuda Form policies and their construction.
