What our apprentices have to say
“One of the main reasons I applied to Simmons & Simmons is due to their innovative outlook towards the future of the legal industry. As an upcoming lawyer in this field, it’s fascinating to be part of an innovative and futuristic culture that Simmons have adopted. My decision to accept my apprenticeship offer at Simmons was made easier upon seeing the inclusive work culture and how friendly everyone was, making a very daunting assessment day feel much more comfortable and enjoyable. These are a few of many reasons that excites me about starting my career in law at Simmons & Simmons.”
- Rishley Permalloo, Apprentice

Top tips for the assessment:
- Familiarise yourself with the competencies we look for and our values.
- Research the trainee role so you understand the day to day tasks, types of challenges and decisions you may face.
- Ensure you complete the assessment at a time and place where you will not be distracted.
Tips: Practical tips for preparing for a video interview can be found [here][1]. To prepare for the questions, consider why commercial law and Simmons & Simmons and do your research into what the programme and studying involves. Tips: The assessment is similar in style to the LNAT test, which some institutions use as an admissions test for undergraduate law degrees. As part of your preparation, you may wish to look at the sample LNAT test papers and commentary.
Stage 4: assessment centre
We’ll invite you into the office for the day where we will find out more about your skills and tell you more about us. You’ll complete the following:
Interview: We’ll explore your interest in the role and present you with some scenarios to see how you would respond.
Case-study: We will give you some information to review about the firm and our clients. We’ll then ask you some questions on what you have read to understand your business focus and how you would collaborate.
Written task: We will ask you to read an article and provide a written summary of risks and opportunities.
Tips: Leave yourself plenty of time to arrive on the day and plan your route. Before the day, make sure you have reflected on why you are applying to the programme and why Simmons. During all exercises, ensure you read all the instructions and all parts of the brief – if there are elements you don’t address; we can’t assess you on these. Keep an eye on timing and plan out how you will use your time at the start.
“The in-person assessment centre at Simmons & Simmons was very enjoyable. From start to finish, we were welcomed by the Early Careers team who made sure that we were comfortable. We had lunch with trainees and toured around Simmons where we were able to ask questions and gain a deeper insight into the Simmons culture. The assessment centre tasks were explained in depth and the interviewers made sure to put us at ease. I had a lovely time completing the tasks and learning more about Simmons & Simmons!"
