Jonathan, a supervising associate in the Energy, Natural Resources and Infrastructure (ENRI) team in London, is an admitted attorney of the High Court of South Africa and a member of the South African Legal Practice Council. With a background in private corporate law, he has significant experience advising on M&A transactions across multiple jurisdictions and sectors, including renewable energy and mining.

Jonathan has worked with a diverse range of clients, such as Mainstream Renewable Power, Next Energy Capital, the African Legal Support Forum, Brookfield, First Quantum Minerals and Orion Resource Partners.

Jonathan’s international experience includes working at two leading international law firms in Johannesburg before joining Simmons & Simmons in July 2022.

Jonathan’s experience includes advising:

  • Mainstream Renewable Power (and its JV partners, including IFC, Agility, Ascension, Rockefeller Brothers and Sanlam) in relation to the sale of the ‘Lekela’ renewable power platform, the largest pan-African renewables platform which operates 1GW of wind power projects in South Africa, Egypt and Senegal, with a 1.8GW project pipeline. The sale transaction valued Lekela at approximately US$1.5bn.
  • Brookfield on a legal due diligence in relation to the acquisition of Data4 from AXA IM. Data4 is a data centre firm operator headquartered in Paris with operations across Europe. This transaction focussed on projects in France, Italy, Spain, Poland, UK and Luxembourg.
  • Brand Energy on the due diligence of renewable energy projects across the UK and a subsequent JV transaction with developer Industria Services, including various intra-group restructures.
  • Uniper SE on a long-term power purchase agreement between its Swedish subsidiary, Sydkraft Hydropower AB, and Augusta, an investment house specialising in renewable sector, for the sale of electricity by Sydrkaft on behalf of August for €150m.
  • Next Energy Capital on the acquisition of a number of small UK renewable energy development acquisitions, including, most recently, Rotherham Solar, a pre-RTB solar and BESS project of 50MW.
