James has worked on a range of contentious and non-contentious intellectual property matters including commercial licensing, collaboration agreements, software protection, patent and settlement proceedings, life sciences regulatory compliance and the intellectual property aspects of corporate transactions and commercial arrangements.

James has experience in a wide range of industries including life sciences, TMT, energy, finance and defence with a focus on transactions involving intellectual property.

  • advising on the formation of OGCI Climate Investments LLP, a $1bn collaborative investment fund designed to tackle climate change on a global scale, involving several of the world’s biggest oil and gas companies
  • advising the medical device and technology company, Adherium (NZ) Limited, on a long-term supply and development agreement with a leading pharmaceutical company for the supply of inhaler related products, and related intellectual property matters regarding the company’s IPO on the Australian Stock Exchange
  • advising Concordia Healthcare on intellectual property aspects of its US$3.5bn acquisition of Amdipharm Mercury Limited from Cinven
  • advising Cenkos Securities plc as nominated adviser and broker to Creo Medical Group plc, a medical device company focused on the development and commercialisation of minimally invasive surgical devices, on its IPO on AIM
  • advising the joint sponsors and bookrunners on intellectual property matters regarding a £275m placing and open offer by Circassia Pharmaceuticals plc
  • advising the UK Ministry of Defence on licensing and intellectual property aspects of its ground breaking UKMFTS training programme
  • advising an energy business on the licensing of its trade marks and other intellectual property matters concerning a third party investment into the business
  • advising a consumer goods company on its licensing and collaboration arrangements with a potential joint venture partner and intellectual property ownership and licensing provisions in its agreement with a marketing consultancy.
Background

James has a degree in Natural Sciences (Chemistry and Physics) and joined Simmons & Simmons as a trainee in September 2012. James qualified into the intellectual property team in February 2015. During his training contract he spent six months on secondment to the firm’s Paris office. James has a Postgraduate Diploma in Intellectual Property Law and Practice from Oxford University.
