Fred is a patent attorney (UK and European qualified) in the firm’s Intellectual Property group. He has been practising patent law since 2006, specialising in patent prosecution and contentious matters for chemical and mechanical inventions. He graduated from the University of Cambridge with a Master of Natural Sciences degree.
Fred has particular expertise in the life sciences sector, including pharmaceuticals, medical devices, drug delivery, drug-device combination products, and consumer health products. He has extensive experience of contentious patent proceedings in opposition at the European Patent Office and in national litigation, having defended numerous commercially important life sciences patents. Notable examples include the defence of patents for Noctiva™ (desmopressin acetate nasal spray), Bendeka® (bendamustine HCl injection), Revlimid® (lenalidomide), Xeplion®/Invega Sustenna® (paliperidone palmitate), and wound dressings for Kinetic Concepts, Inc.
Fred also has expert knowledge of Supplementary Protection Certificates (SPCs) and has prepared successful appeals on SPC matters to the German Federal Patent Court, Spanish Supreme Court and Polish Administrative Court. One of his SPC cases was recognised as a significant development in SPC law by the Max Planck Institute’s “Study on the Legal Aspects of Supplementary Protection Certificates in the EU” prepared on behalf of the European Commission.
