03 Sep 2018
Simmons & Simmons has hired a new IP team to boost its offering in Italy. This is another step in the firm's strategic growth of its international IP practice, a key pillar of its sector strategy in Healthcare & Life Sciences and TMT. Stefania Bergia and Giulio Enrico Sironi joined the firm on 01 September 2018 as partners from specialist law firm Vanzetti e Associati.
Throughout her career Stefania Bergia has regularly handled judicial and extra-judicial cases in all areas of IP including patents, trade marks and domain names, appellations of origin, industrial design, copyright and related rights, unfair competition, trade secrets and arbitration. Stefania received a Juris Doctor degree at the Catholic University of Milan, a PhD in IP Law at the University of Parma and was admitted to the Italian Bar in 2000. She has been a partner at law firm Vanzetti e Associati since 2004 after initially joining the firm in 1996. Stefania has a longstanding and steady relationship with the University of Parma where she has held over the years a course in 'Legislation and patents - Chemical and Biotech Patents and GMO Legislation' and also delivers postgraduate courses including those held by the Italian Superior School for the adjournment and specialisation of Court Judges.
Much like Stefania, new partner Giulio Sironi also has a long track record of judicial and extra-judicial cases in all IP-related sectors. Giulio received a Juris Doctor degree, magna cum laude, at the Catholic University of Milan, a PhD in IP law at the University of Pavia and was admitted to the Italian Bar in 2001. He was made a partner at law firm Vanzetti e Associati in 2004 after joining in 1995. Giulio is adjunct professor of IP Law at the Catholic University of Milan, Faculty of Economics, and has also held a number of courses on patent legislation at the University of Parma. He regularly presents papers and attends domestic and international conferences and holds lessons at postgraduate courses. He has authored a series of articles and comments in the IP field published by well-known law review publications for many years.
Stefania and Giulio will be supported by associate Anna Colmano who also joins from Vanzetti e Associati where she spent 16 years and developed extensive experience on a wide range of IP matters.
IP is a strategic priority for Simmons & Simmons. The market is increasingly demanding a high quality service offering across jurisdictions on patent litigation, brand management and IP transactional work among other areas. It is for this reason the firm has identified the need to increase its capabilities in key jurisdictions like Italy. As a leading player in IP, the team will work closely with the firm’s strong existing international IP practice to enhance its global IP offering, which extensively covers the UK, Germany, The Netherlands, France and China. The team will also focus on Italy's domestic and multinational companies.
Commenting on the arrival of the IP team, partner and country head, Andrea Accornero said: “I am delighted to welcome Stefania and Giulio to the Milan office. They are well respected IP lawyers and highly rated in the Italian market. Their expertise offers a world class service for our clients and excellent sector focus on Healthcare & Life Sciences. Stefania and Giulio are the ideal people to establish an outstanding IP practice in the country.”
Speaking about this important appointment, Head of the London IP Group Michael Gavey said: “I am excited to have lawyers of such a high calibre join the team. We pride ourselves on delivering an integrated international IP offering to clients which covers the full range of IP services. Stefania and Giulio are recognised leaders in their field and bring valuable expertise to our international practice. We are thrilled to have them on board.”
Over the past 12 months Simmons & Simmons has welcomed other new IP Partners. Kevin Cordina joined the firm’s London office in May 2018. His arrival marked the launch of a new patent prosecution group, primarily focused on technology, telecoms and medical devices for clients who are seeking to protect their IP in Europe. In December 2017, the firm also welcomed Marina Cousté and François Jonquères, who joined as IP partners in the Paris office.
