New TMT VAT consultancy practice launched
11 Sep 2018
International law firm Simmons & Simmons has announced the launch of its new Telecoms, Media and Technology (TMT) VAT consultancy practice, as part of the Tax practice’s continued expansion. The practice launch further strengthens the firm’s indirect tax offering, building on its noted strengths in financial services VAT consulting and VAT litigation. The launch of this new practice is a direct result of the firm’s desire to provide tax clients with a high quality alternative offering to the Big 4 accountancy firms.
This launch follows the arrival of newly appointed partner (non-lawyer), Joanna Crookshank, who will join the firm on Tuesday 11 September from Ernst & Young LLP, where she was a VAT Director specialising in VAT in relation to the TMT sector.
Joanna brings over 15 years’ experience to Simmons & Simmons. The firm will continue to recruit new team members as the practice grows.
Head of TMT at Simmons & Simmons, Alexander Brown shares his views on the TMT sector: “Over the coming years, the TMT sector will face a number of challenges in indirect tax due to the impact of Brexit, which will change the tax regime, disrupt supply chains and evoke new measures to target the taxation of the digital economy. Clients will need high quality advice to effectively manage the operational risks and costs inherent in meeting these challenges alongside the wider legal and regulatory risks facing their businesses.”
The new team will provide the full spectrum of VAT consulting advice for TMT sector clients, including Brexit related projects such as supply chain disruption and restructuring, taxation of the digital economy, Fintech and disruption of traditional business models.
Commenting on the arrivals, Nick Skerrett, corporate tax partner at Simmons & Simmons said: “These are strategic hires for us that add an important and complimentary tax practice alongside our existing strength and reputation for advisory and contentious tax work. The lack of competition in the tax advisory market has been exacerbated by the restrictions created by audit independence. Clients tell us that they want an alternative. We are excited to have Joanna joining us.”
Joanna Crookshank said: “This is a fantastic opportunity to lead a new business area within a dynamic and highly regarded firm such as Simmons & Simmons and help shape its strategic direction. TMT is a growth sector which I have been involved with for over 15 years. I’m very excited to join Simmons & Simmons and bring my experience in both indirect tax and TMT.”
