Paola Leocani - one of the top 10 innovative lawyers
05 Oct 2018
Paola Leocani, partner at international law firm Simmons & Simmons has been ranked one of the top 10 innovative lawyers in a special report produced by the Financial Times. The report celebrates innovators in the legal industry and the work they do to support clients, enhance their firms and bring legal innovation to the forefront.
Paola has been recognised in the report for her impressive work to include, advising the banks on the Republic of Italy’s buy-back for the record amount of €4.2bn of its €22.418bn BTP Italia issuance. This was the largest sovereign bond in Europe at the time of writing. The syndicated exchange was the first sovereign bond swap conducted as two independent transactions (as compared to switch tender offers or exchange offers), typical of this kind of issuer. The buy-back was structured differently to previous liability management transactions by the Republic of Italy, which are carried out on an electronic trading platform of the MTS. Paola has also played a key role in conceiving crucial Capital Markets reforms including those on liability management transactions and bonds issued by unlisted companies which had a significant impact on the Italian economy.
Paola is regularly recognised for her impressive work. In 2017, she was named one of the Best 50 Lawyers in Italy in a list published by Legalcommunity. Additionally, Paola won the prestigious Debt Capital Markets Lawyer of the Year prize at the Legalcommunity Finance Awards 2018 and the Capital Markets Lawyer of the Year prize during the TopLegal Awards 2017. Paola also received the Transport Lawyer of the Year award at the TopLegal Industry Awards 2018.
Commenting on her award win, Paola Leocani said: “This is a tremendous honour for me. After 20 years of law practice, it’s really one of the greatest rewards in my professional career to have played a role in helping the Republic of Italy through these transaction structures and the management of public debt. My firm and I take special pride and satisfaction in helping to find innovations that have a wider benefit to both the public and private sectors.”
Colin Passmore, senior partner at Simmons & Simmons said: “We are very pleased that Paola has been recognised in this way and feel it is very-well deserved. Paola consistently works on high-profile deals and has an innovative approach to her work. I am excited to see what the next year may bring.”
