23 Oct 2018
International law firm Simmons & Simmons has expanded its practice in Spain with the arrival of a new partner, Juan Martínez Calvo, who will join the firm’s Madrid office on Monday 15 October 2018*.
With extensive experience in transactional work in the infrastructure and energy sector, Juan’s arrival highlights the firm’s commitment to focus on the needs of our clients in the infrastructure and energy sectors across the entire project lifecycle and especially for the investment funds that are leading investment in these industries.
Juan joins the firm from Deloitte Abogados where he was a partner and led the firm’s Infrastructure and Energy practice. He brings over 20-years experience having practiced in various areas to include concessions and public contracting, energy M&A, infrastructure projects and contentious administrative litigation, among others.
The expansion of the practice comes at a time when the energy and infrastructure sector is experiencing increased investment, which is likely to generate a strong pipeline of projects over the coming years.
Infrastructure: Several European countries have initiated an active PPP programme to develop new transportation infrastructure projects such as Norway, Germany, Netherlands and Spain. Furthermore, the largest institutional investors are increasing their direct investment activity and, more often, are competing with infrastructure funds for assets.
Energy: The Spanish energy sector is well developed and maintains a positive reputation globally, especially in renewable energy where it is a world leader. Spain has leveraged its development by pledging to meet between 30% and 44% of gross final energy demand through clean energy by 2030 and there is a relevant pipeline of new photovoltaic projects of 12.000 Mw for the coming years to develop along with a strong movement from the oil and gas industry to the power and distribution electricity assets.
Upon joining the firm Juan will focus on developing the relationships with the main key players of these sectors and empowering the firm´s reputation in these markets.
Commenting on Juan’s arrival, partner and country head, Andrés Mochales said: “We are delighted to welcome Juan to the team. His extensive experience and understanding of the industry will be an asset to both the office and the firm as a whole. As one of the biggest European economies, the Spanish market is rapidly expanding and we want to ensure we continue to meet the needs of our clients, Juan’s arrival is a further example of how we will do this”.
Mark Curtis, partner and international head of corporate & commercial commented: “We are delighted to welcome Juan - his profile and expertise in transactional work represent a great addition to our international infrastructure team”.
Partner, Juan Martínez Calvo added: “I am eager to start to work within Simmons & Simmons and be part of its international project. Joining Simmons offers me the opportunity to develop my expertise with the most sophisticated clients in the complex transactions of these industries, mostly with large investment funds”.
The firm opened it’s Madrid office in 2000. In 2007, responding to client needs, the office merged with the Spanish firm Mochales & Palacios. At present the firm has nine partners and a team consisting of English qualified and Spanish lawyers. Juan’s arrival follows the recent hiring of two of-counsels.
