10 May 2018
Simmons & Simmons received two awards at the TopLegal Industry Awards 2018, held in Milan. The firm was named “Investment Funds Law Firm of the Year” and partner, Paola Leocani was also named “Transport Lawyer of the Year”.
TopLegal is one of the leading Italian benchmark publications, its annual industry awards scheme honours excellence in the Italian legal market decided by a jury consisting of 56 business leaders.
The firm won the prestigious “Investment Funds Law Firm of the Year” award, inter alia, for its highly specialised asset management & investment funds and private equity offering, also known as the firm of choice for fund formation, financial services regulation and the structuring of relevant arrangements and underlying investments.
Simmons & Simmons was specifically praised for the cutting edge advice to Etimos Partners (and to its founding partners Antonio Pace and Prof. Stefano Preda) in the creation of the Morgan Stanley Geo-Risk Macro Fund, the first hedge macro-fund based on a geopolitical analysis, whose investment manager (and investor) is InvestCorp. The firm assisted on financial markets regulation issues with a team lead by partner Romeo Battigaglia, head of the financial markets department and the financial services group in Italy, as well as Of Counsel, Maria Giusy Naccarato. Both Romeo and Andrea Accornero, country head and private equity lead for Italy, collected the award.
Partner, Paola Leocani was named “Transport Lawyer of the Year” for her assistance to Ferrovie dello Stato Italiane S.p.A. as issuer on its inaugural green bond for a nominal value of Euro 600m and annual coupon of 0,875%, pursuant to the EMTN Programme of the Company. The net proceeds, arising from the transaction, were used to finance the renewal of the rolling stock for public transport and, namely, the regional passenger transport and the high-speed network. This had a positive effect in terms of environmental sustainability as set forth in detail in the FS Green Bond Framework, drawn-up in compliance with the 2017 Green Bond Principles by the International Capital Market Association.
Paola Leocani commented: “I am very pleased to receive this award, as a further market recognition of the position of our integrated DCM team that can rely on outstanding domestic and international capital markets capability, coupled with unrivalled expertise in infrastructure. The use of sustainable instruments points out the increasingly important role of such securities in the current economic framework”.
Romeo Battigaglia also commented on the win: “I am honoured to receive this prestigious award. The asset management & investment funds team is one of our Centres of Excellence. This award recognises our market position as a firm at the forefront of products’ innovation, in partnership with our clients”.
