Simmons & Simmons strengthens Spanish practice with Madrid law firm merger

As part of its stated plan to double the size of its presence in Spain, Simmons & Simmons announces that it has agreed a merger with Madrid-based Mochales & Palacios. This will add four new partners to the Simmons & Simmons practice in Spain, following receipt of the appropriate registration with the Law Society, as well as eight new associates, which will create a combined practice with a total of 27 lawyers.

Mochales & Palacios, which is well respected within the Spanish legal market, focuses primarily on corporate work, although it also has a number of financial institution clients and a well regarded litigation, corporate crime defence and civil litigation team. The practice was formed 20 years ago by Andres Mochales and Emilio Palacios, and they were later joined by the firm’s two other partners, Carlos Jiménez de Laiglesia and Fernando Aizpun.

This enlarged Spanish practice will require additional management resource, in order to manage its ongoing growth and to continue its integration with the firm’s other international offices. As a result, Richard Armitage, head of the firm’s International Projects Group and formerly based in London, has transferred to Madrid to become the new Spain managing partner.

Luis Felipe Castresana will continue to lead the firm’s development in the Spanish market and with Richard’s arrival he will be able to focus more heavily on client development and to capitalise upon his very strong reputation within the market.

Managing partner Mark Dawkins says:

"We are delighted to have completed this merger, as it brings additional strength and depth to our pre-existing practice in Spain. It was a stated aim within our firmwide business plan to double the size of the Spanish practice and this merger very nearly achieves this in one move."

"The economic success and the recent international expansion of its largest corporations and financial institutions provides continuing demand for high quality, international legal services and ensures Spain remains an attractive market for the firm."

Emilio Palacios says:

"Merging with an international law firm of Simmons & Simmons’ stature is a perfect strategic fit for this firm. We recognise that our clients are increasingly looking to expand into international markets in the future and by becoming part of this international firm we can offer our clients the best legal advice, wherever their needs are based."
