Careers in our Düsseldorf office

The Düsseldorf office is located in the heart of the city, right where all the shops, banks and other businesses are. In early 2016, 15 years after being the first Simmons & Simmons office in Germany, the office moved to the landmark Kö-Bogen building. Located right at the pond of the Hofgarten park, our spacious and state of the art premises provide an ideal environment including a large roof terrace where client and internal events take place.

Popular shopping and dining areas, like Königsallee and the Altstadt (old town) are right at one's feet. There are also a number of gyms and recreational facilities nearby, not to speak of the large Hofgarten park.

With further offices in Frankfurt and Munich, we are located in Germany’s most important business capitals. Both internationally and in our German offices we work closely together and connectivity is a strong feature of our everyday work and working environment. Business updates are held on a regular basis, streamed to all German offices and include all staff. In all of our locations, the office infrastructure makes it easy for our people to reach out and refer to each other for sharing knowledge and expertise.

Legal Practice Areas

Our Düsseldorf office reflects the overall firm structure: there are four main international practice groups, and we have qualified lawyers working in the following areas:

The Corporate/M&A practice in our Düsseldorf office receives particular recognition for its energy & infrastructure related work as well as for international M&A transactions. Our dispute resolution department has a strong reputation in advising in relation to white collar crime, where they have set up and run the international whistle blower hotlines for a number of DAX 30 companies. The employment group is especially well known for advising financial institutions and asset managers on their most complex employment matters. The Intellectual Property group has a reputation for advising a number of leading international life sciences companies on complex, international patent litigation in relation to some of their most important products.

Please see profiles to learn more about some of our lawyers in Düsseldorf and around the network to understand more about why they chose Simmons & Simmons and how their careers have developed at the firm.

We aim to be a first choice law firm for clients in the world’s fastest growing industries and therefore take time to understand the distinct demands that each client faces in order to provide a meaningful and valued service. We do this by offering deep commercial knowledge of each of our key sectors which underpin our international practice groups. For more information, see our sector focus.

Associates start working on challenging cases for international clients from day one with Simmons & Simmons. Depending on aptitude and availability we also offer secondments for our associates to either our clients or other Simmons & Simmons offices in the international network.

In terms of training opportunities, Düsseldorf’s associates meet on a monthly basis in a self-organised forum called the “Associates Breakfast” to discuss cross-departmental topics of interest. The German lawyers also take part in the firm wide international retreats of their respective practice groups, which are usually arranged on an annual basis.

In all of the above practice areas and sectors we welcome convincing applications by exceptional qualified candidates at all times.

Business Services

Being the first Simmons & Simmons office to open in Germany, the Düsseldorf office houses the central administrative functions for Germany, including Finance, Marketing & Business Development, Human Resources, Library Services, Translations and Client Services, in addition to the central services and wider support provided by our core business services teams in London. In Düsseldorf, there is a team of legal secretaries spread over the practice areas.

The business services teams work very closely with the legal practice groups. Due to our moderate size we all know each other well, which facilitates open and easy communication, not only in Düsseldorf but across the various German offices and with the wider international network, with regular department meetings and calls ensuring strong links across teams. Hierarchies are flat, and decisions are made quickly.

Please see our employee profiles for some insight into why some of our business services staff chose Simmons & Simmons and their experiences since joining.

Rewards and Benefits

We offer a generous rewards package in line with our position as a leading international law firm.

The working culture and environment in the German offices is best characterised as friendly yet demanding. Our employees are left with the responsibility to organise their work load in the most suitable way. With a very welcoming, open-minded and trusting atmosphere, we pride ourselves on having a collegiate culture you may not expect of a large international law firm.

Recently we started offering pro bono services in our German practice, including advising Frankfurter Kunstverein and FRIEZE art magazine on some tax and employment related issues. Our passion for art can also be seen in our office premises where we showcase selected pieces from the Simmons & Simmons contemporary art collection.

A variety of social events and group activities has been established over the years, including:
