Rowan is head of Simmons & Simmons’ London Intellectual Property Group. He specialises in substantial patent litigation for life sciences companies, with an additional emphasis on the strategic management and co-ordination of pan-European litigation. He has also acted in patent actions for clients in other industries, notably medical devices, chemicals, electronics and telecommunications, as well as machine tools, oil drilling equipment, irrigation systems and corkscrews.

- interim injunction for originator pharmaceutical company against a generic product launched one working day after grant of the generic marketing authorisation: an ex parte injunction application the following day led to an undertaking not to sell pending the full inter partes hearing, where the interim injunction was granted; liaison with lawyers handling similar actions in other European jurisdictions
- acting for Cephalon in litigation against Mylan and Orchid for infringement of patents relating to Cephalon's major modafinil product, and assisting Cephalon in supervising and co-ordinating parallel litigation against other defendants in other European countries
- preparing litigation to prevent launch of an infringing generic product in 17 different jurisdictions, our US client’s first “patent expiry”
- acting for Medtronic CoreValve in “freedom to operate” litigation with Edwards Biosciences concerning a patent for a stent-mounted heart valve for use in percutaneous valve replacement, at first instance and on appeal, including coordinating with parallel proceedings in Germany.
Recommended as a “really perfect lawyer“ who “thinks through all issues thoroughly" by Legal 500, and described by Chambers as “fantastically brilliant” with “an excellent understanding of IP issues”. IAM ranks him as one of the World’s top patent litigators, and states: “[He] ‘knows all the tricks of the trade and never misses a point ”. Peers confess that “he’s the kind of lawyer you’re scared to litigate against”.
Rowan is Chairman of the Intellectual Property Lawyers’ Association, represents patent solicitors on the Intellectual Property Court Users’ Committee, and is a member of the advisory group for the UK IPO team working on implementation of the UPC.
Rowan teaches the patent segment of the Oxford University Diploma in Intellectual Property Law, lectures frequently in the US and the UK on all aspects of intellectual property law, and has been invited to address plenary sessions of AIPLA, IPO and APAA.
Rowan joined the firm in 1980 and became a partner in 1988. He worked in Germany from 2013 to 2015, helping to establish the firm’s Munich office.
