General Experience

Maria is a managing associate in our Madrid office and works in the financial services group. Her area of expertise is investment services, financial instruments, asset management, insurance products, investment funds and market regulation.

She has a in-depth understanding of the asset management industry and advises on financial services and markets regulatory work, including provision of regulatory advise for Spanish and international financial institutions. Maria's clients include banks, investment funds, asset management companies, investment firms and insurance companies.

María regularly provides advice in relation to cross-border regulatory projects including passporting procedures and the obtaining of the required local licences from relevant regulators.

Recent Work
  • leading Spanish investment firms on a number issues such as setting up the business and implementation of local regulatory requirements with a specific focus on contractual and informative documentation for investors, internal procedures, policies and practices. This includes agreements with third party services providers
  • leading credit institutions on all regulatory matters related to the provision of financial activities in Spain, this includes advising on investment services, products offering, restrictions on licensing, marketing, client documentation and conduct of business rules
  • advising a significant number of international financial institutions on the offering of relevant UCITS and AIFs in Spain and compliance with applicable on going obligations.
Background

In February 2012, María joined the financial markets team at Simmons & Simmons to lead the regulatory practice in the Madrid office. Maria previously worked for another leading international law firm in the financial regulations department, and before that spent seven years working for Allfunds Bank.

In 2000 María was admitted as a lawyer in Spain, she is now considered an experienced practitioner specialising in financial law with more than 15 years of professional financial regulatory expertise.

María frequently lectures and publishes on her areas of expertise.
